Racoon Island Restoration
Project Location: Terrebonne Parish LA
Customer’s Name: USDA / NRCS
General Scope of Project: Raccoon Island is experiencing shoreline retreat both gulfward and bayward, threatening one of the most productive wading bird nesting areas and shorebird habitats along the gulf coast. It is also home to the state’s largest nesting colony of brown pelicans, the state bird. In two separate projects, Bertucci constructed stone structures (segmented breakwaters and a groins) designed to protect the island from further erosion and to trap the sand carried by prevailing currents.
Our Firm’s Role: Bertucci performed all construction and materials acquisition. This involved transporting all materials and personnel to this extremely remote site in coastal Louisiana.
